Chapter 16

The next morning, when Xavier opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Billy’s blond hair on the pillow and the curve of his bare shoulder. There was a crack in the dark curtains, and through it, a long arc of light reached into their motel room. Amazed at the serenity he felt, Xavier stared at Billy’s back, at the golden freckles speckling his shoulder blades, and was filled with hope.

Craving a cigarette, but resisting the urge to light up, Xavier turned to his back, being careful not to wake Billy. He stared up at the shapes the water damage had created on the ceiling and let his thoughts roam. That long line and circle there next to the broken ceiling fan looked like a turtle. It reminded him of a story his father had told him many times when he was a boy. It was the story of the creation of the world according to the Iroquois. He still remembered it today.

A long time ago, the world had been covered in deep waters and the only living things on earth had been sea creatures. No sun. No stars. And no moon. Only darkness all around. Above the world, where the Grand Chief lived in the clouds, was a gigantic tree that never shed its leaves or flowers, and this tree’s shadow was the blanket over the earth. Then one day, the Grand Chief fell ill, and delirious, dreamed that he could only be cured if the big tree was uprooted. Determine to survive, he sent his pregnant daughter to follow the tree’s roots all the way down to earth and bring light to the world. She was given corn and fire, and then down she fell.

She fell for a long time and tore light into the skies.

The sea creatures, who’d watched her descent in awe and panic, rushed to save her. The beaver drowned trying to stop her fall. The duck couldn’t rescue her either. Then the giant turtle, Bearer of the Earth, broke her fall and carried her on its back.

The Grand Chief’s daughter gave birth to a daughter, who grew up fast, and in time, she too became a mother, giving the Grand Chief in the sky two grandsons—twins. The first boy, proud and healthy, was named Teharoniawako, and he created the sun. But his brother, a mean boy named Sawiskera, broke through his mother’s arm pit and killed her. He brought the darkness back to the world. Saddened, Teharoniawako pulled the moon and stars from his mother’s bosom and the night was never black again.

In everything there was light and dark. Goodness and evil. The two brothers were together in all living things and this was the order of the world.

Xavier thought of his own duality. It was in accordance with nature. He turned to look at Billy, who was still lying on his side, facing away, and gently touched his shoulder. No sin. Like the night and the day, they were bound together forever in a cycle none could ever disturb.
